A few hosting providers have free or discounted packages available to specialist groups; generally charities or students, or clubs, or not-for-profit organisations. There are usually conditions attached, but in a few cases e.g. Heart Internet, there are none. (Indeed Heart Internet allow you to develop a commercial site for free and without covering your site with banners and ads.) The service is usually limited in some way; either by monthly data transfer allocation or perhaps limiting your storage space.
You will have to buy a domain name, but realistically the cost of this is generally small.
We personally feel this is a good step forward by these hosts. It allows people to try them out, see if an idea will work and at a minimal cost. The goodwill it generates towards the host cannot be measured. Obviously there should be good business reasons for doing this, but we are amazed more hosts have not taken up this idea. By helping to support charities and other groups in this way, they are doing something altruistic and they are helping their own profile enormously. Don't underestimate the power of goodwill.
